16" square of willow
1" bias strips of silk or velvet to bind frame edge Frame wire
Use pieces of old felt for lining hat. 1 pair of combs.
Use pattern on page 60. Lay pattern on willow and mark around pattern on willow with a pencil and cut out willow. Put willow on a head block, fitting it carefully on all points and pinning willow frame to block with push pins. Slightly dampen willow and leave on block until thoroughly dry. Take frame off block and wire entire edge of frame, using a button hole stitch. Then, fold 1" bias strips lengthwise and bind entire frame edge using a basting stitch (Ill #1). Round frame to fit your head as you sew on wire.
Sewing Beads On FrameSew beads hit and miss on frame. Put needle through frame and put a large bead on needle, then a small bead (Ill. #2). Then, put needle back through large bead and through frame. Do this beading heavily, using all kinds of shapes and color beads. Fill in with pearls, or you can make an entire hat of pearls if you have enough pearls.
Lining HatBlock an old piece of felt on head block. Then, pin pattern on block over felt. Mark around pattern on felt with white pencil, if felt is dark, and black pencil if felt is light colored. Cut out felt on pencil line and glue felt to underside of hat, leaving felt edges raw. Use combs for anchorages.

| Wool Felt Beret And Matching Bag |

Material Required
1 yard material - for Beret and Bag
1 yard lining - for Beret and Bag
2 - 9" zippers for Bag (matching color)
Head band ribbon for Beret
Pin Beret pattern on material and cut out. Baste and machine stitch dart on top piece (Ill. #1), and steam press seam open. Join Beret facing in back, and machine stitch and steam press this seam open. Baste top and facing together, having seams on top and facing match. Then machine stitch, remove bastings, and steam press this seam open all around Beret edge. Be sure to do this perfectly as that pressing gives it the professional finish.
Lining Beret
Pin pattern to lining material and cut out. Proceed just as you have for outside of Beret. Slip lining into Beret, having right side out. Baste lining in Beret around headsize (Ill. #2), then turn material in 1/4" around headsize and overcast by hand, using a loose stitch so as not to decrease headsize. Do not swirl this head band. Make head band ribbon the same measurement as your head - allow for lapping ribbon - lap and sew ribbon together. Measure and mark this band into quarters. Then mark Beret headsize into quarters (have ribbon seam in back) and pin ribbon quarters to match quarter markings on Beret headsize. Sew ribbon around headsize, (Ill. #3). Trim with bow as Ill. #4 and #5.

Turn material to right side, mark center of bag on each side, and make a 2" pleat on each side of bag lengthwise (Ill #1). Stitch pleat 4" and flatten pleat into a box pleat. 1 - 1/2" plastic clip
1 - 14" zipper
1 yard wool felt
1/2 yard crinoline
1 - 20" x 2" buckram piece
1 button - size of a quarter
1/2 yard silk lining
Pattern for bag and hat is the same, only for hat use just part of pattern marked #1. The model hat and bag are made of black wool felt printed in blue and gold. (This material is often found in a department store). Any heavy material like bengaline, heavy linen, velveteen or corduroy can be used. If material used is not as stiff as felt, use a layer of crinoline in hat between layers. Use crinoline in bag always even with felt. Top of hat is of the printed felt, and facing is of plain felt. One side of the bag is of printed felt and the other side, bottom and handle of bag are of plain felt. When using felt, seams can be left raw.
Instructions For HatLay pattern marked #1 on the bias of material and cut out (2) pieces. Baste together all around edge and then machine stitch. Mark center back and make 1/4" pleat. Then mark 3" on each side of this pleat and make a 1/2" pleat on each side. Sew pleat down 4" on underside. Leave pleats standing up, (Ill. #1). Cover your plastic clip with a piece of felt (Ill. #2), then pin center pleat to center of clip extending over clip 1/2". Sew to clip. Tack last pleats so that each end of brim will stand out like Ill. #3.
