Material Required For Hat And Bag
3/4 Yd. material.
1/2 Yd. crinoline.
Lining and headband for hat.
1/4 Yd. buckram for bag.
1/4 Yd. taffeta for bag lining.
1 Sheet of sheet-wadding.
Lay pattern on crinoline and cut one brim. Baste this crinoline to wrong side of fabric and cut out. Then lay fabric side of brim on right side of fabric again, baste all together and machine stitch all around brim edge (Ill. #1). Now turn cloth brim over and baste ends together and stitch (ELL. #2). Press seams open. Then turn last cloth brim over crinoline and baste top and bottom together around brim edge and machine stitch at the very edge of brim. Run a basting thread every 1/4" around brim for guiding machine stitching. Machine stitch brim, (ILL. #3), remove bastings and steam press.

To Make Crown
Cut five sections for crown of crinoline and join these pieces together and machine stitch. Fit this crinoline crown on head block. Pin to block around bottom of crown and steam. Now cut out five more sections of material. Join these pieces together and machine stitch. Be sure the joining at top is even and neat. Baste material down on either side of seam and machine stitch each side of seam (Ill. #4). Then put this crown of material on block, fit and pin it to block and steam. When both crinoline and fabric crowns are dry, baste both together. Pin crown on top of brim around headsize. Try on, as some adjusting as to depth, etc., may be needed. Sew crown on to brim by hand (Ill. #5). Finish around crown with a 1-1/2 bias fold, raw edge turned in on both sides, making fold 3/4" when finished. Steam press this fold. Slipstitch fold around crown. Be careful not to draw fold around headsize too tight. Line hat and put in swirled headband.
Bag MeasurementsCut material for side of bag, 22" x 9-1/2",
Cut bottom of bag using pattern
Cuff at top of bag, 22" x 6".
Cut a piece of material 10" x 2" for handle.
Use a 9" facile fastener. Facile fastener can be purchased (Marshall Field Notion Department).
Follow directions for wool bag on Page 76, using the above measurements, except for handle.
How To Make Handle
Fold a piece of material 10" x 2", lengthwise. Turn raw edges in 1/4" and stitch flat. Then stitch rows 1/16" apart until piece is filled with stitching. Fold over, making a 611 loop. Sew this in one corner of inside of bag before lining bag. Use loop over wrist to carry bag, instead of a handle.
